Pomegranate Antioxidants
Remains of pomegranates have been found in Persia dating to 1000 BCE. Perhaps they knew, as we’re learning, that the rich, red juice of this fruit is good for you! It turns out that the juice has antioxidants as well as many other qualities. Let’s look a little closer.
Did you know?
The average fruit contains over 600 seeds.
Health Benefits:
Pomegranate juice is a very healthy source of vitamins. One glass of juice provides you with 40% of the Vitamin C you need for the day. It also contains folic acid (which helps your body produce red blood cells), Vitamin A and E. Besides this, the juice:
* Works as a blood thinner to help lower bad cholesterol levels
* May deter the risks of heart disease when used in conjunction with a good diet and exercise program
* Has the potential to inhibit some of the deterioration damage from osteoarthritis
* Appears in studies to have cancer-fighting qualities particularly against prostate, skin, lung and breast cancer
* Deters plaque build-up in arteries
* Can possibly be used to slow the progress of Alzheimer's disease.
* Lowers blood pressure when consumed daily
* Supports dental health
If all that weren’t enough, it has antioxidants – as much as three times more than green tea!
Hype or Health:
All the buzz about this juice may leave you wondering how much you can believe. Is it just another trend? Studies done on the fruit indicate otherwise. It’s certain that the fruit contains polyphenols, anthocyanins and tannins (those are fancy names for antioxidants) at strong levels. Those same studies maintain that it can, indeed, lower blood pressure and the amount of bad cholesterol in the body.
Nonetheless more studies need to be done to completely determine the extent of the health benefits. There’s no question it won’t hurt you, and may well get you on the road to a much healthier body.
